Interpretation of the Sympto-Thermal Chart

This sympto-thermal chart shows the correlation between all indicators of fertility.

The step-by-step interpretation is a systematic approach that can be used on any sympto-thermal chart.
Chart Interpretation

Make your observations in the same order:-

1. Check :-

  • Age of woman
  • Number of chart
  • Length of shortest cycle
2. Was the last temperature chart biphasic ?

3. Is this chart from a woman in special circumstances ?

4. Interpret the temperature chart :-

  • Length of cycle
  • Day of shift
  • Apply the rule of "Three over Six"
  • Identify the first day of the post-ovulatory infertile phase
5. Interpret the mucus pattern :-
  • Identify the first appearance of mucus
  • Interpret mucus pattern according to description
  • Identify Peak Mucus Day
  • Identify the pre-ovulatory and post-ovulatory infertile phases
  • Double check mucus with temperature
6. Interpret changes in the cervix -(optional)
  • Low, firm, closed, tilted cervix is infertile
  • High, soft, open, straight cervix is fertile
7. Apply the calculation - if there is a record of at least 6 cycles :-
  • Shortest cycle minus 20 to identify the last infertile day
8. Observe the timing of minor indicators

9. Check other factors which may affect the charts

  • Disturbances
  • Stress factors
  • Illness
  • Medication
10. Apply the guidelines appropriately :-
  • For planning pregnancy
  • For avoiding pregnancy
Colour code:-
Coloured highlight pens can be used to aid chart interpretation,
emphasising the phases of the cycle for example:-
  • Red for the period
  • Yellow for the fertile phase
  • Green for the infertile phases
