Book Review
The opening chapter, while concentrating on anatomy and physiology, goes under the title of
Fertility awareness and sets the tone of the whole book. It presents the basic science by
emphasising that the patient can be easily made aware of the cyclical changes in her body that are
consequent upon the reproductive ovarian and menstrual cycles. The underlying philosophy is that by
increasing awareness the patient can use herself as a bioassay and avoid therapeutic and investigational
medical intervention in the prevention of pregnancy and the management of infertility.
The following nine chapters then deal with basic natural family planning methods and would benefit
patients as well as professionals. Thereafter there are three chapters devoted to natural family
planning in particular circumstances - postpartum and during lactation, following oral contraception
and before the menopause which build on the firm grounding of previous chapters.
Four chapters are devoted to more gynaecological aspects of fertility, including infertility,
contraception, termination and sexually transmitted disease. They may prove useful in answering
the questions of patients being referred on for consultant opinions.
University Lecturer/Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Rosie Maternity Hospital, Cambridge British Journal of Sexual Medicine. May/June 1996
