For the Breast-feeding Mother ....

Return of fertility during weaning.

A woman is 98% protected from pregnancy during the first six months post-natally when:
These parameters for Lactational Amenorrhoea Method (LAM) are considered more fully in the section on Breast-feeding.

When these criteria no longer apply, a woman has to consider another family planning method.
If she chooses a natural method, she is helped to observe signs of returning fertility.
Special breast-feeding charts are used which include space for recording details about the baby including feeding patterns.

During the long phase of infertility during full breast-feeding, a basic infertile pattern of dryness (or scant, sticky mucus) will be established. The temperature will shows a swinging pattern and the cervix will be low firm closed and tilted.

The chart illustrates the pattern of a breast-feeding woman from week 34-41.

As supplementary feeds are increased, the number of breast feeds are reduced.

Note the levelling of the temperature followed by the shift in the 40th week. The arrows show the earliest sign of fertility as indicated by the cervix or the mucus.

Mucus patches are observed more frequently then copious amounts of slippery clear stretchy mucus are observed leading up to ovulation.

The post-ovulatory infertile phase starts after the fourth consecutive high temperature past peak day.

The coverline has been extended back to cover the low phase temperatures that have levelled. The post-ovulatory phase is slightly shortened.
